CQWW 2008 - Guinea - 3X5A

The VooDoo Contest Group began in 1986 when K5VT, KC7V & N7BG, travelled to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands to participate in the CQWW CW Contest. Our name was coined in 1995 as we crossed the border between Benin and Togo. Rob GM3YTS was inspired by a group of Voodoo Priests we encountered while on the road. Our nickname has become "VooDudes".

Past Trips

Over the years we’ve had operators come and go but the number of VooDudes remains small. Each year a core group of 8 to 10 VooDudes, consisting of US and UK operators, travel to participate in the CQWW CW Contest from various West African nations.

For the complete story on the VooDoo Contest Group, read the team’s journals in Contesting in Africa – Multi-Multi on the Equator (shown on the right).

‘Contesting in Africa’ is a fascinating new book detailing the VooDoo group’s experiences, edited and much of it written by renowned contester and DXpeditioner extraordinaire Roger Western, G3SXW, as well as additional chapters contributed by other Voodoo team members. The book also features many photographs.

This book provides an unusual and most fulfilling treat in simultaneously entertaining the armchair traveler with accounts of the challenges and adventures in getting to and operating from exotic sun burnt countries, and at the same time providing inspiration and an informal planning guide for your own adventure and DXpedition.

The book is available here.

The story of the 2007 VooDoo Contest adventure has also been put on a DVD. Bob Allphin, K4UEE, a member of the 2007 team, has put together a DVD of that year’s trip called “The 2007 contest DXpedition to Guinea, West Africa – 3X5A”.

Travel along with the team as they move their 2,000 pounds of equipment 600 miles overland with two AK-47-toting guards. Strain along with the team and their local helpers as they put up eight antennas before the CQ World-wide CW contest in November 2007. Hear the massive pileups as each man gets a chance to show his CW prowess in front of the video camera.

If you like pileups—you’ll love this video!

This DVD as well as several other videos of other Amateur Radio DXpeditions filmed and produced by Bob can be purchased here.
